Accelerated Reader List
What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computerized reading incentive and management program. Using a combined system of vocabulary level, length of the book and level of difficulty, the book is assigned a reading level. Points are awarded when reading tests are successfully completed by the student. A student receives the full point value for 100% and the points decrease as the correct number of questions answered decreases.
How does it work?
All students in grades 1 through 8 of Bethany Lutheran School will be participating in the Accelerated Reading Program. Your children will be choosing books from a list of carefully selected books. Many of the books will be available in our school library, however, we have quite a few book tests on our computer that we do not have books for here at school. These are available at the public libraries.
Each book has been evaluated as to reading level and length. Based on those two factors, each book is assigned a point value: i.e., 5 points, 8 points, etc.
After reading a book, students will sign up with their classroom teacher to take an AR Test. First & Second grade students will be given their tests in the school library on computers used solely for this purpose as well as in their classrooms. Students in grades 3-8 will take tests in their own classrooms. Tests will usually take no more than 5 minutes. The test measures comprehension of the book. The students will receive a given number of points for reading the book. Points are based on the point value of the book and the student's score on the test. Students will receive a TOPS report reporting their progress after taking each test.
Students will earn an "Accelerated Reading Grade" for "one fourth" of their quarter's Reading grade.
Students who earn above and beyond the required points for the quarter may earn an "AR Hall of Fame" award at the end of the school year.
